The 48-Hour Follow-Up: Turning Event Contacts Into Conversations

Use a simple networking follow-up system to sort event contacts, write relevant messages, and stop weak leads from consuming your time.

A networking follow up works when it restores context and proposes a sensible next step. A generic message sent to every badge scan does neither. Build a small system before the event so useful conversations do not disappear into an unsorted list.

Sort contacts by next action

Use three groups: people who need a prompt response, people worth nurturing, and people who require no action. Add one sentence of context to each contact while memory is fresh. Do not pretend every introduction is an opportunity.

Write the message around the conversation

Use this structure:

  1. Name where you met.
  2. Mention the specific topic or problem.
  3. Deliver anything you promised.
  4. Suggest one proportionate next step.

For example: “We spoke after the accessibility session about testing QR codes on printed signage. Here is the checklist I mentioned. If useful, I can compare notes after you test the next print run.”

Give the recipient a reliable route back

Include a digital business card in your signature instead of repeating a block of links. Teams can standardize this using a digital business card for sales teams.

Know when to stop

One relevant reminder may be reasonable. Repeated vague messages are not follow-up; they are noise. Record the outcome and focus on people with a real reason to continue.

Frequently asked questions

Must I follow up within 48 hours?

No deadline guarantees success, but prompt follow-up helps both people remember the context. A later specific message is still better than an immediate generic one.

What if I barely remember the person?

Be honest and use the context you recorded. Do not invent familiarity. If no useful reason to write remains, it is acceptable not to send a message.
