NFC Business Cards Explained: How Tap-to-Share Actually Works

Learn how NFC business cards work, what the chip stores, which phones support them, and when a QR code is the more reliable choice.

NFC business cards use a small radio tag to open a web address when a compatible phone comes close. The tag normally stores a URL, not your full contact record. That design lets the page change without rewriting or replacing the physical card.

What happens during a tap

The phone energizes the passive NFC tag, reads its short data record, and offers to open the URL. The browser then loads your card. No pairing process is required, and the recipient should not need the card provider's app.

Why the tag should store a URL

Contact fields can outgrow the limited capacity of a tag and become stale. Writing a stable HTTPS URL keeps the hardware simple and makes the destination editable. The same URL can power the card's QR code and messages.

Device and placement considerations

NFC reading position differs by phone. Thick cases, metal surfaces, stacked cards, and poor tag placement can reduce reliability. Test the finished item with several devices and mark the tap area clearly. The detailed NFC business card page covers the supported sharing flow.

NFC versus QR

NFC is fast at close range. QR works at a distance, on a screen, and in print. They are complements, not substitutes. Put both on the same smart business card so the recipient has a fallback.

Frequently asked questions

Does NFC send my details automatically?

No. It generally presents a link for the recipient to open. They still choose whether to visit the card and save the contact.

Can an NFC card work without a battery?

Passive tags do not require their own battery. The recipient's powered phone creates the field used to read the tag.
